Asphalt Shingles or Elastomeric Membrane: How Do You Choose?

Asphalt shingles and elastomeric membranes are both excellent roofing systems, but they are not suited to the same roofs. The deciding factor is not personal preference — it's the pitch of your roof.

Pitch Comes First

Asphalt shingles are designed for sloped roofs: water drains quickly between the shingles. On a flat or low-slope roof, water would pool and eventually seep in. That is where an elastomeric membrane — waterproof and seamless — takes over.

Durability and Maintenance

A quality architectural shingle lasts 25 to 40 years. A two-ply elastomeric membrane lasts 20 to 30 years with minimal maintenance. Both are durable when properly installed; the difference comes down mainly to the type of roof.

Cost and Aesthetics

Shingles are generally more affordable and come in a wide range of colours to enhance the look of your home. The elastomeric membrane, less visible from the street, is all about performance on flat roofs. In many cases, your roof type makes the choice for you.
